Do you hate waiting for answers? Could you live with a sense of suspense every day? 500,000 Australian children live…
The Maritime Union of Australia Youth Committee originally contacted our Community Fundraising Manager in November, hoping to raise some money to contribute towards the Christmas celebrations at PMH, and thought they may be able to raise $2,000 to $3,000.
It was also an opportunity for union member Ryan Furtado, the Western Australian Youth Representative of the Maritime Union of Australia (MUA), to give back to the hospital that looked after him as a child, where he had been on ward 3B.
The Youth Committee didn’t put on a big event or source raffle and auction prizes. Instead, they simply started contacting everyone they knew on all MUA vessels and wharves up and down the coast, asking for donations for the kids at PMH.
Each crew in the Union has an emergency fund, to help crew members or their families in case of difficulties. At the end of each year, sometimes there is money left in the pot, and the Youth Committee asked that their fellow union-members consider donating it to PCHF.
By simply asking, they raised a massive $9,780.60! The funds from the MUA were split between Christmas celebrations and providing distraction therapy for patients at PMH.
The Foundation helps to create moments of happiness for sick kids and their families in hospital, and creating positive diversions is a large part of that. This includes giving kids toys, puzzles, craft materials, books, stickers, magazines and iTunes vouchers.
As these are single-use items, there is always a need for them. Children in hospital often require distraction and a dose of happiness! Funding these items is vitally important.
We are very grateful for the support of Ryan and his friends at the Maritime Union of Australia.
Remember to ask – you never know what might happen!
