Tamara’s QV1 Descent Journey

Tamara has a very special reason for participating in the 2017 and 2018 QV1 Descent for Perth Children’s Hospital Foundation

At two and a half years old, Tamara’s son Josh was diagnosed with Hirschsprung’s Disease, a bowel condition where parts of his intestine cannot function.

Unfortunately, with the late diagnosis came complications, including having a stoma or artificial opening in his abdomen for seven months, fourteen operations in fourteen months and a stoma reversal. Josh spent a considerable amount of time in hospital, recovering from his surgeries.

“Without the expert surgeons, nurses, counsellors and Megazone, we would not have survived the journey.  With an eight-month-old at home needing our attention and a two and half year old in hospital, it was hard to juggle the demands,” explains Tamara.

“We still visit every month or two for the BBQ at Megazone.  PMH is a community we are proud to be part of.”

Tamara decided that it was her turn to give back and she registered for the adrenaline filled Urban Descent in 2017.

Without the help of Perth Children’s Hospital Foundation, Joshua’s journey would have been a lot more difficult for us all. I wanted to help other families get through their journey.

If Joshua can go through fourteen operations and still have a smile on his face, I could jump off a building! Since having kids, I have not stepped too far out of my comfort zone.  Completing the training with my family watching was the first milestone and then jumping off QV1 not only gave me a real sense of achievement, I also saw the amazement in the kids’ faces – and as I say to them – you can do anything if you put your mind to it!

Knowing the money I had raised was going to a community that we love so much was amazing. Anything that helps our children get through the dark days is money and effort well spent.

You will have fun doing it! I certainly did and I am doing it again this year!”
