Peter Piromanski of Piroman Gemstones donated the piece, claiming he got the idea from his son Adam who works as a firefighter.

“Adam sees firsthand the huge impact that the care of staff at Princess Margaret Hospital has on young children who have burns injuries, so he suggested using the fire opal to support the Burns Unit at PMH” Peter explains.

“I loved Adam’s suggestion … so I jumped at the chance to do something to help!”

A prospector by trade, Peter discovered the incredible Fire Opal centrepiece by sheer luck.

“I was prospecting along old ocean beds when I misjudged a creek. My trailer went up and my car went down.”

By the time he had wrestled the car loose it was getting dark and he decided to settle in for the night. Shortly after waking the next day, while enjoying his second coffee of the morning, Peter looked down and saw the magnificent opal resting gently at his feet.

He immediately thought, “Wow, that’s what I’m looking for!”

With his wife Vikki, Peter commissioned Sally Brown, from Adorned by Sally to lovingly set the Fire Opal as a necklet. The necklet was later valued at a whopping $33,250! The necklet is currently on display at Soklich & Co, 61 Angelo St, South Perth.

“Thankfully none of my kids have had to spend time at PMH. I remember when they were first born and I’d think to myself, if something goes wrong it’s the nurses and doctors that I will rely on to help them.”

Peter understands the huge difference these funds could make, “Everyone at PMH does such incredible work looking after sick kids.”
